Dictyostelium discoideum is a soil-dwelling amoeba that eats bacteria. Shown below are Dictyostelium cells in which one FtsZ protein, FszA, has been tagged with the green fluorescent protein. The fluorescent FszA protein (green) is targeted to the mitochondria (red) that have incorporated the red dye, MitoTracker Red. FtsZA forms dots and arcs that are believed to be the precursors of complete FtsZ rings that help to divide the mitochondria into two.
