The probable national benefits from research in analytical spectrometry, and mechanisms for capturing these benefits

The National benefits of analytical spectrometry research are clear in several areas. Certainly, positive research outcomes in the area of crime and terrorism are demonstrably of national benefit and are, for example, a designated priority area for the ARC. Improved detection of drugs and explosives, including portable detection devices that might be used at airports, are outcomes, which might be expected. Similarly, the application of spectrometry in medical and biological areas will lead to improved diagnostics and healthcare and will form the basis of new industries. Novel methods for trace elemental analysis will give improved detection limits and will find important applications in medicine, foodstuffs and environmental management. Health and wellbeing of the nation, both human and environmental will be advanced.
