Australian Research Capacity in Analytical Science

This audit was undertaken by scrutinising research publications in analytical science for the period 1983-2003.  The bibliometric source used was Analytical Abstracts, which is an abstracting service compiled by the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) and covers publications appearing in more than 100 international journals covering analytical science.

The following areas are covered comprehensively by Analytical Abstracts:

  • Chromatography, electrophoresis, spectrometry and radiochemical methods
  • Inorganic, organic and organometallic analysis, including applied and industrial products
  • Clinical and biochemical analysis, including proteomics and genomics
  • Pharmaceutical analysis, including drugs in biological fluids
  • Environmental, agricultural and food analysis

All publications in which Australia is listed as the country of origin were downloaded and for publications appearing in the years 1996-2003, ARC classification codes were assigned to each publication.  A further, more detailed classification was then assigned using the classification system of the international journal Analytica Chimica Acta.  The coded publications (almost 1800 in number) were then used to compile trend data, which are presented on the following pages:

Table 1: Number of publications per year (1980-2003 from Analytical Abstracts) produced in Australia

Table 2: Breakdown of publications from 1996-2003. Number of publications per year by ARC code classification

Table 3: Breakdown of publications from 1996-2003. Percentage of total publications per year by ARC code classification

Table 4: Breakdown of publications from 1996-2003. Number of publications produced by state/territory by ARC code classification
