An outline of proposed research directions and the desirable network configurations, infrastructure and facilities to support research in metrologyThe challenge for a research network in metrology is to ensure that institutions outside of the universities and CSIRO are included, in Australia this will be aided by the establishment of the National Measurement Institute in July 2004. This institution will be the amalgamation of the Australian Government Analytical Laboratories (AGAL), the National Measurement Laboratory (NML) and the National Standards Commission (NSC). It would be sensible if the new NMI provided the focus of the metrology network in Australia. It is also important to encourage academic research and to bring together individuals and departments that are actively pursuing such research. Through individual research and participation of organizations in international meetings and schemes, Australia has had a greater international profile in this field than the size of its research base would suggest. This will be facilitated by membership of the ARNAS network. In universities research will continue into traceability, statistical models of measurement results and method validation. Any new analytical method or instrument must be demonstrably validated, and so metrology research will continually feed into the wider activities of the ARNAS community. |
