Research Classifications

Throughout this report, the ARC classifications for analytical chemistry will be used to address the range of sub-disciplines covered by analytical science.  These classifications are based on the techniques used in each sub-discipline, rather than by application areas.  Analytical chemistry has the broad code of 250400, with the following ten sub-disciplines:

250401 Separation Science
250402 Analytical spectrometry
250403 Electroanalytical chemistry
250404 Flow analysis
250405 Sensor (Chemical and Bio-) Technology
250406 Immunological and bioassay methods
250407 Other instrumental methods
250408 Chemometrics
250409 Quality assurance, traceability and metrological chemistry
250499 Analytical chemistry not elsewhere classified

Using these classifications, a bibliometric survey of Australia's performance in analytical science has been compiled and appears in Section 2 of this report.  This survey attempts to identify areas of strength and weakness in Australian analytical science.  The applicants named in the successful ARNAS seed funding proposal were then divided into teams to address each of the above sub-discipline areas under the following headings:

  1. A survey of the current state and probable direction of development of research activity internationally within the sub-discipline area
  2. An outline of proposed research directions and the desirable network configurations, infrastructure and facilities to support the sub-discipline area
  3. The probable national benefits from the proposed research, and mechanisms for capturing these benefits.

The reports provided by the teams are listed here.

Finally, a set of annotated hyperlinks to relevant national and international web sites can be found by following this link.
